The Musang King is undoubtedly still one of the top durians being sought. The deep yellow-fleshed pulp, so soft and bursting with intense flavours have made Musang King extremely popular and durian fans do not mind paying for premium quality.

But look – there is now a serious contender in the market, namely the Black Thorn. Exclusively available only at Durian King in Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bukit Bintang, the Black Thorn has gained legions of fans in the past couple of years. The flesh is a dark golden yellow shade, almost orange in colour and the texture is incredibly smooth and creamy. In fact, I think the texture is its best selling point.

As for taste, personally I find it milder than the Musang King’s. If you prefer more intense flavours in your durian, then you may opt for the Musang King or Trakka (Chook Kiok). The Black Thorn is prized for its incredible texture and also because it’s so exclusive, planted only in a certain farm in Kedah. Erik of Durian King told me that the location of that farm is highly classified and the durians are collected by special deliveries and sent to KL every day.

In terms of pricing, The Black Thorn definitely sits at the No.1 spot, selling for RM60 per kg! Well, this is definitely for the serious durian enthusiasts. Anyway, the prices of these thorny babies fluctuate from day to day, depending on the availability of stocks. Don’t be surprised if the prices indicated below may change daily.

“DURIAN FOR A CAUSE” is an All-You-Can-Eat Durian Buffet which will take place on Sunday, 14 August 2016 at Durian King TTDI (Waze: https://waze.to/lr/hw283bek3f).

All you have to do to contribute is to purchase a ticket at RM50 for a 1-hour durian buffet.
There will be 3 sessions and the allocated times are:
Session 1: 3.00pm – 4.00pm
Session 2: 4.30pm – 5.30pm
Session 3: 6.00pm – 7.00pm
All proceeds from the event will be channelled to Pusat Jagaan Kanak-Kanak Down Syndrome & Hyper Active Bandar Bukit Tinggi 2 Klang, Shepherd’s Centre Foundation in Semenyih and The Shepherd in Kg Orang Asli Ulu Kuang, Rawang.
It’s Durian King’s way of giving back to society and everyone can support this by eating durians – eat as much as you can, for RM50! For durian lovers, and even if you aren’t one, this is a great way to chip in and help the 3 needy centres.

Durian King@TTDI is located in a safe area at the outdoor parking lot of Pasar Besar Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. There’s ample parking space, plenty of seatings and a cooling environment under the trees. Oh yes, we truly enjoyed our durian feast under those cool shady trees.

Even if you do get a bit hot under the collar, just order some of Durian King’s Durian Chendol! The huge bowl of chendol comes with a generous topping of mashed durian and at only RM8 per bowl, I think that’s a steal.
